City leaders will gather for a flag-lowering outside City Hall at noon, Sunday. Residents are urged to attend.

The actions are part of a nationwide Moment of Remembrance Β resolution passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate recently, urgingΒ Americans toΒ Stop and Remember a decade after.Β

On Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaeda operatives crashed two commercial hijacked jets into the World Trade Center towers in lower Manhattan, crashed a jet into the Pentagon, and hijacked a fourth jet that crashed into a PennsylvaniaΒ field when alerted passengers tried to overcome the terrorists.

Thousands died in the attacks, the towers burned and collapsed. The U.S. subsequently went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan. As recently as last month, some two dozen Navy SEALS lost their lives in the aftermath of 9/11.

In Chesterfield, Mayor Bruce Geiger and the city council members will lead residents who gather at city hall in the Pledge of Allegiance, singing America, the Beautiful and the National Anthem.

Geiger is expected to conclude with comments.
