Kehrs Mill, Long Roads To Open By Quittin' Time

Circuitous detour to end; officials promise you can cross Wildhorse Creek via Kehrs Mill and Long roads, just like before.

Kehrs Mill and Long roads in Chesterfield are set to open up Friday afternoon, July 13, after a month-long closing, county highway officials said.

This is one day earlier than previously posted on the website by St. Louis County Department of Highways & Traffic.

The pair of roads closed June 14 to replace a concrete culvert, and in doing so created one of the most circuitous and inconvenient detours for those traveling between Chesterfield Valley and points north and south. Rush hours also saw more traffic jams on alternate routes.

The closure is part of a project for the improvement of Kehrs Mill Road and Long Road, from the Missouri Central Railroad tracks to south of Wild Horse Creek Road.

Gershenson Construction, Inc. updated the county on the road opening.

The construction, which will be ongoing through June 2013, will provide:

  • five lanes of traffic (two northbound, two southbound, and a continuous two-way center left turn lane),
  • enclosed storm drainage,
  • eight-foot (8') wide concrete sidewalks on both sides of the roadway,
  • remove and replace the existing bridge with a new bridge over Bonhomme Creek,
  • construction of a single 10' by 8' concrete box culvert,
  • construction of retaining walls,
  • full depth asphalt pavement,
  • traffic signals,
  • sodding,
  • seeding
  • other incidental items.

Work began on the project December 2011, with utilities being relocated.

According to the city's website, "after completion of the construction, the contractor will backfill and sod all disturbed areas of private property with bluegrass or zoysia sod, depending on the existing ground cover. Generally, sod will not be placed between June 1 and September 1 and/or during drought conditions."
