More Parkway Budget Cuts Coming, District Seeks Public Input

According to the school district's website, more cuts are planned for the district and the public is invited to take part in the discussions. 

Community members and parents can attend meetings in January to review a draft list of budget cuts. More cuts are necessary to balance future budgets and restore fund balances to the required levels, the website stated. 

"Based on current projections, Parkway needs to reduce an additional 1 to 2 percent ($2 to $4 million) from the operating budget beginning with the 2013-14 school year," according to an update on Parkway's website. 

The meetings will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on the following dates. 

• Jan. 14 - North High
• Jan. 24 - West High
• Jan. 28 - South High
• Jan. 31 – Central High

The site states that administrators and staff have been discussing areas where the district could possibly make cuts and a preliminary list has been presented to a district-wide budget team, which consists of teachers, administrators and support staff. The team will use guiding principles to create a list of initial recommendations to present to Superintendent Keith Marty and the school board. 

A draft list of recommended cuts will  presented to the public for feedback at the January meetings. 

The site states that community input will then be considered, the school board will vote on the final recommendations and if they are approved, the cuts will take effect in the 2013-14 school year.
