Russ Carnahan filed Tuesday morning in Jefferson City to run in the St. Louis First Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay, also a Democrat, filed shortly after Carnahan. The two will face off in a primary election August 7. Carnahan lost the Congressional district he now represents after the 2010 U.S. Census showed St. Louis lost population, and subsequently the area lost a district—only two seats in Congress, not three. Clay is a Democrat in the First Congressional District where Carnahan will challenge him. Clay was elected in 2001, replacing his father Bill Clay in Congress. In the new Second Congressional District, which includes much of West County, former GOP National Co-Chair Ann Wagner all but has the nomination sewn up. A Democrat would likely have a tough fight to win in November in the new heavily Republican Second district. Patch will follow with more information as it becomes available.

When: February 28, 2012, 10:45 A.M. Democrat and U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan filed Tuesday morning in Jefferson City to run in the St. Louis First Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay, also a Democrat, filed shortly after Carnahan.

The two will face off in a primary election August 7. Carnahan lost the Congressional district he now represents after the 2010 U.S. Census showed St. Louis lost population, and subsequently the area lost a district—only two seats in Congress, not three.

Clay is a Democrat in the First Congressional District where Carnahan will challenge him. Clay was elected in 2001, replacing his father Bill Clay in Congress.
