Art Van Furniture To Take Over Old Rothman Store Locations

CEO Jay Steinback said the only thing that would change is the name on the building.

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, MO — Rothman Furniture stores closed its St. Louis area stores in September, but a new furniture seller will soon move into the old locations. Art Van Furniture, a Michigan chain with more than 100 stores in the upper Midwest, will open four new stores in the area next year, including one in Richmond Heights, the company said.

Fox 2 St. Louis reports that Rothman CEO Jay Steinback will own and operate the franchises in St. Louis.

Steinback said he needed to reinvent Rothman and wanted it to be bigger and better to compete in a tough market.

"We kind of saw there was one on every little street corner--a mom and pops--that's where you went to buy Cohen's electronics appliances and everybody went there and as Circuit City and Best Buy rolled through town, it just shrunk that opportunity market where it's really, really hard to grow," Steinback said.

Steinback said at a press conference that his company had always stood for family, quality, and affordability, and that only the name on the building will change. The new stores are expected to open sometime in the spring, and will carry popular furniture brands, including those by HGTV star Joanna Gaines.
