My 6-month-old son has better posture than I do. Just plant him at the foot of a modest-size pillow. He'll gaze around the room, watch the antics of our dog or cat and pound his rattling toys on the ground with fervor.
All while sitting up straight.
I pointed this out to my wife the other day, and she laughed. She neither confirmed nor denied the observation.
Of course, secretly Julie was thinking: You know, he's right. One fewer back surgery down the road, I suppose.
It's one of the many things I know Micah does better than me. I'm OK with that because it means he's naturally gifted, or I've taught him something smart, or both. Probably the first option.
Among Micah's other talents at this age:
Continued ability to eat solid food after gag-reflex initiation
Our son had his first taste of pureed-to-the-best-of-our-dicing-machine's-ability avocado earlier this week.
He responded by gracing us with some of the contents of his stomach.
Julie had placed the avocado in a bowl alongside applesauce, which is already a hit. Pioneering Dad (me) assumed World's Best Son (Micah) would take the green mush like a champ, no sugar-coating required.
That's my boy!
Of course, I'm extremely proud of him. He ate that avocado right up. But as with medicine, a spoonful of sugar helps it go down.
Budding interest in the taste test
After a recent church service, a friend pointed out that Micah had managed to bite off several sizable chunks of a paper card that visitors are encouraged to fill out.
I was engaged in conversation and didn't realize the progress he had made. So it was much to my surprise that I pulled out several wet wads of paper after prying open his mouth.
He made a face but didn't seem fazed.
And don't read a thing into his eating something intended for visitors. I assure you, he's very welcoming.
Sleeping through the night
Can I get an amen? I might mention that Julie and I still feel tired on a fairly regular basis, so we haven't quite stumbled upon the solution to restfulness.
A breakthrough is imminent, I'm sure.
