A Message From The Mayor

Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”  

I thought about this quote as my family and I were watching the Olympics recently. Millions of us observe the experience of an athlete smiling with success, or the tears of failure, gritted teeth set in determination, the graciousness of victory and the dignity of those who came up shorter than what they had dreamed – but on this world stage, with tremendously talented athletes exemplifying incredible individual excellence, it is hard not to recognize that the collective Olympic experience is so much greater than each participant. 

Years of commitment, hard work and diligence from many people have enabled these athletes to reach the Olympic milestone. While individuals are competing, they have not gotten to this point on their own or without the strong belief that they, in fact, COULD.

Few of us will ever compete on a stage this large – yet in our own community, we see the positive results of people working together and believing in their abilities to turn concepts into reality. For example, the Arts Commission, working collaboratively with the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council, have been persistently  to be built in the “heart” of our city – a sculpture with a purpose and an upcoming, unique addition to the aesthetics of our community. I look forward to this vision becoming a part of our community in the near future! 

As mayor, one of the things that I have been enjoying most is listening to the suggestions and ideas of our citizens - as this is where opportunities begin. Some people have discussed lofty goals for our community while others have shared visions that may seem to be a far reach. I have come to realize that most sights for which we aim are attainable, particularly when we have the reinforcement of so many talented people around us.

Leading our city may not be equal to the rigors of managing an automotive company or as intense as participating in the Olympic games, but the concepts of accomplishment and success remain the same...and by the way, I happen to think we can!
