Ladue Ponders Name For 5th Grade Center In Creve Coeur

The school district could have a decision on what to call the new facility on Ladue Road sometime in the fall.

The Ladue School District is on track to open the new fifth grade center on Ladue Road in Creve Coeur coming up in August. It has a principal. But will the school, which neighbors the district's Early Childhood Center on the West campus have a name?

School board members tabled the discussion late last month. According to a district spokeswoman, parents expressed an interest in having a "more interesting" name than the "fifth grade center."

With the exceptions of Reed Elementary, Horton Watkins High School and Ladue Middle School, the rest of the district's schools are named after their street locations.

According to district policies, "When any new facility is acquired or constructed, a collaborative process will be used, overseen by the superintendent or designee, to recommend appropriate names for the new facility. The Board of Education will make the final decision on the name of any district facility. The district will give preference to names of local individuals and individuals who are associated with the intended use of the new facility. Special consideration will be given to those names that have special significance to students, staff or the community.

The policy also leaves open the possibility of selling or leasing naming rights "to an entity or organization whose stated purpose is consistent with," the district's educational mission.

District spokeswoman Susan Dielmann said among other things, Ladue will look at how other school districts have handled the issue, with the possibility of making a decision in the early fall.
