Letter From The Principal: From Rachel's Challenge to Zero Conflict

Dr. Kim Brandon's latest letter to the community.

On Tuesday, after Rachel's Challenge, you will see posters for Zero Conflict going up around .

The idea for Zero Conflict originated with Joey Goldman and Meghan Mudd (both 8thΒ grade students) as part of their goal to address the issue of bullying at Northeast Middle School.Β (Click on thisΒ link to view the Zero Conflict contractΒ that Joey and Meghan created.)

As a follow-up to Rachel's Challenge, we are encouraged to continue the positive chain reaction with our own FOR (Friends of Rachel) club.Β  Zero Conflict is Northeast's FOR club.Β  If your child is interested in becoming a part of this, encourage your child to speak with a grade level counselor or watch the announcements for opportunities to attend meetings.

Rachel's Challenge has a curriculum that we can access to support the work with our students as we move into next year and beyond.Β We are also looking into a partnership with Metro Theater and CharacterplusΒ that will support our work in developing students who are respectful, caring, honest, responsible, and understand what it means to live with integrity--our Viking Values.

We believe that combining these layers of support from Rachel's Challenge, Metro Theater and Characterplus, as well as our ongoing adult development around Social Justice will create the culture we need at Northeast.Β  As a faculty, we know we have to have the relationship piece in place before our students will respond to the rigor and relevance of learning.Β

We do not want our students to be distracted by issues of bullying or fearful to express their opinions.Β  We want our students fully engaged in thoughtful, challenging, rigorous, relevant, and engaging learning!Β

This work supports our mission of ensuring that all students are curious, confident, and capable learners who will be equipped to understand and respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world!

If you would like to join us in creating a culture and climate of kindness and compassion at Northeast, let me know by sending me anΒ e-mailΒ or by calling me at 314.415.7101.

Together, we CAN make a difference!

Thank you, again, for all your support in bringing Rachel’s Challenge to Northeast Middle!

Kim
