Message From The Creve Coeur Mayor: On Changing Seasons and Coffee

Barry Glantz and other city officials are starting an informal outreach program later this week.

Creve Coeur Mayor Barry Glantz's monthly column in the City of Creve Coeur's newsletter is republished here with permission:

β€œIf nothing everΒ changed, thereΒ would be noΒ butterflies.”

I found this quoteΒ (author unknown)Β particularly poignant, as I’ve alwaysΒ enjoyed the Labor Day holiday and theΒ unofficial transition from summer to fall.Β Don’t get me wrong, summer is a greatΒ time of year for outdoor recreation, travelΒ and relaxing by the pool with friends andΒ family – but there is something aboutΒ that first, brisk autumn evening (or basedΒ on the heat this summer, at least theΒ anticipation)...

My wife, Sheri, and I are alsoΒ experiencing a number of personalΒ transitions. Earlier this year, our oldestΒ son, Evan, graduated from the JournalismΒ School at Mizzou, and is now gainfullyΒ employed. Our youngest daughter,Β Marissa, just started high school and weΒ recently returned from dropping off ourΒ middle son, Corey, for his freshman yearΒ at Indiana University.Β

For the City of Creve Coeur, the summerΒ was also an opportunity for us to beginΒ a number of our capital improvementΒ projects. Each year, the City CouncilΒ approves contracts for street and sidewalkΒ repair and maintenance (a large portion ofΒ our Capital Improvement Program budget)Β and you should be seeing some of thoseΒ projects take place throughout the City. Our Community Development/PlanningΒ Department is also starting to receive aΒ number of applications for new projectsΒ proposed in the city. Some will goΒ through our rigorous staff and PlanningΒ and Zoning Commission review processΒ with little or no controversy – others willΒ need to be thoroughly vetted by a wideΒ array of interested stakeholders in theΒ community…but all will be given carefulΒ and thorough consideration to ensure thatΒ the quality of life that we enjoy in CreveΒ Coeur is maintained or improved. Β

As a means to promote dialogue (inΒ addition to structured city meetings) andΒ talk more informally about change andΒ transition in the city, on the first Thursday morningΒ of each month. While this is short noticeΒ for September, our first coffee will beΒ held in the main lobby of the GovernmentΒ Center on Thursday, September 6, fromΒ 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. There will be no setΒ agenda, but rather an informal chanceΒ for me (and our City Administrator MarkΒ Perkins) to listen to the thoughts ofΒ residents (and businessΒ leaders).

The many transitionsΒ we encounter in ourΒ daily lives afford us theΒ opportunity to grow. AsΒ summer evolves into fall,Β the caterpillar into theΒ butterfly – our city shallΒ continue to flourish asΒ well.
