Police Issue Fireworks Warning

The have issued the following warning to anyone thinking of setting off fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July:

The Independence Day holiday is quickly approaching and the Creve Coeur Police Department would like to remind residents that possession or use of fireworks is illegal within the city limits. Officers will be providing extra patrols throughout the city to enforce this ordinance. 

The risk to homes and properties catching fire due to fireworks is extremely high this year due to the dry conditions. A safer alternative is to leave fireworks to the professionals. There are many community firework displays planned around the St. Louis area.

If you can't resist the lure of setting off some of your own fireworks, pediatric emergency doctor Donna Eckardt has some suggestions, including the following:

• Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
• Set up safety barriers when setting off fireworks at home; children are curious and may get too close.
• Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
• Always wear protective clothing. Many times kids are swimming and stop to do sparklers. This is never a good idea, as swimwear doesn’t provide good coverage.
