A report presented to the board in November said the move would "allow students to take courses because they want to learn about a particular subject and not have to be concerned about hurting their rank in class."

The report cited several area school districts, including Ladue, Rockwood, and Hazelwood, which had also made the change. Ladue, the report said, made the switch so the district could "recognize more students for high achievement".

Under the cum laude system, in 2012 at Parkway Central High School:

  • 42 students would qualify for Summa Cum Laude
  • 45 students would qualify for Magna Cum Laude
  • 43 students would qualify for Cum Laude

The November report also surveyed 14 colleges and universities around the country, from the University of Missouri to Yale and found that the change would not have an impact on admission.

Two schools responded that an applicant would require more paperwork and indicate "no class rank".
