Report: Patriot To Cut Benefits For Up To 1,000 Retirees

The Creve Coeur based energy concern is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Patriot Coal has sent a letter to up to 1,000 non-union retirees notifying them that the company plans to "terminate" health care coverage.

Patriot is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings in federal court, which began in St. Louis late last month after union interests were successful in bringing the case here instead of in the New York City area.

The St. Louis Business Journal reports that more union protests are expected downtown Tuesday at Peabody Energy's St. Louis headquarters to continue pressing the case that Peabody and Arch Coal set up Patriot as a way of ridding the companies of retirement obligations.
