The Week Ahead: A Protest, School Transfer News & More

We're getting you ready for news you should expect this week in Creve Coeur.

This week will be a busy one in and around Creve Coeur for a number of reasons.

  • Tuesday morning, members of the United Mine Workers of America say they will stage a protest outside the CityPlace corporate headquarters of Arch Coal. Miners have taken issue with actions taken by Arch and Patriot Coal, saying the companies have been involved in accounting schemes that jeopardized the health and retirement benefits of employees.
  • Thursday morning, we'll be at the Creve Coeur Government Center, along with anyone else interested in hearing from Mayor Barry Glantz, who hosts an informal Coffee With The Mayor gathering to get feedback from city residents on issues of their choosing. The event starts at 7:30 a.m.
  • By the end of the day Friday, school districts will have a much better idea about where thousands of students in the failing Riverview Gardens and Normandy School Districts will be allowed to transfer, and to see how many of them will end up in Parkway, Pattonville or Ladue Schools. School administrators from around the area will gather Friday at the Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis office just outside Creve Coeur next to Craig Elementary School, where they will determine which specific schools will absorb the students. In addition, Riverview Gardens will announce a secondary district where it will transport transferring students at no family cost, after Mehlville school leaders indicated they only had room for a few hundred students. There is some speculation that Parkway could end up being that district.
  • Friday starts Missouri's annual Sales Tax Free Holiday Weekend. Not all communities in the area are participating (Creve Coeur is), and there are some particular rules that go along with it. We'll fill you in.
