Update: Nolan Berry Gets Good Doctor's Report; January Return Eyed

The Senior Spartan is working his way back from a pair of broken arms.

De Smet Jesuit basketball fans have known that Nolan Berry, the team's 6-8 forward, would not be on the court Friday night when the Spartans take on Metro Catholic Conference rival CBC. But Berry, who has signed a letter of intent to play at Butler University, now has a better idea of when he'll be able to return to action following a practice accident that left him with a pair of broken arms.

He had pointed to a Thursday doctor's appointment as the next step in getting cleared for a return, but given the nature of the injury, nobody really knew what to expect.

According to his mother Meg, there was encouraging news, even if it delays his return to the court past the upcoming Meramec Holiday Tournament, which had been targeted as a possible return.

"He is definitely healing faster than expected, but they want to wait two more weeks and do another round of x-rays. At that point, if he is at 100% no pain, he should be cleared to begin full practices," she wrote in an email to Patch Thursday night.

For now, she said he'll return to practice for non-contact drills and continue physical therapy while keeping an eye on the January schedule, which includes cross-town rivalry games against Chaminade January 8 and 18.
