Westboro Baptist, Red Light Cameras on Council Agenda

Creve Coeur's City Council meets Monday October 22 at 7 p.m. following a 6:30 p.m. closed work session.

On the agenda:

• Possible final passage of the city's revised sign code: The final reading was postponed earlier this month when representatives from Rothman Furniture raised objections over limits on signage at the firm's new mattress store on Olive Boulevard.

• Red Light Camera Program: Creve Coeur Police have endorsed extending the city's program. The current contract with vendor American Traffic Solutions doesn't expire until September of 2013. Under language getting a first read Monday, the city could deny "any application for any license or permit or other authorization or benefit from the City" until fines are paid.

• Comprehensive Plan Review: Mayor Barry Glantz announced which is used as a blueprint for considering issues regarding zoning and development projects. The current plan has not been updated in more than a decade.

• Disturbance of Funeral and Burial Services: Ward 1 Councilman David Kreuter and Ward 2 Councilwoman Tara Nealey have asked for time to discuss this issue and it comes just as the Federal Court of Appeals ruled the City of Manchester's ability to enforce an ordinance restricting funeral protests was constitutional. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church have become known for their anti-gay protests at the funerals of U.S. soldiers, claiming the soldiers' deaths are a result of America's tolerance for homosexuals. They regularly picket military funerals with signs such as "Thank God for dead soldiers." Neither councilmember could be reached for comment over the weekend.

Monday's council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Creve Coeur Government Center.
