Wild West Community Garden Fall Festival Held

Advanced Master Gardener Dick Cone told attendees at the Wild West Community Garden's Fall Festival at the Wildwood Family Y on Saturday that if they like fresh-grown vegetables for winter, they're in luck.

Following Cone's talk on "Extending the Harvest" and "The Soil Food Web," the 50-plus gardeners celebrated the fall harvest by sharing dishes and recipes. 

"We had a successful growing season this year despite the very hot and dry summer, and we are continuing to grow all of the fabulous cool weather crops," said Jodi Smedley, Wildwood Y's corporate wellness specialist. 

She said several varieties of lettuce, swiss chard, peppers, beets, carrots, radishes, kale and even some tomatoes still can be found in the Wild West Community Garden garden.  

"We grilled several vegetables right off of the vine Saturday. It was a fantastic day of fun, fellowship and delicious food," she said. 

The Wild West gardeners continues to donate fresh produce to the Eureka Food Pantry. Smedley said sharing healthy, homegrown vegetables is very important to the gardeners.

"We are already making plans for our 2013 growing season," Smedley said.
