When it comes to primary headache disorders, like migraines, it all comes down to genetics. Essentially, the way a child’s brain is wired from the very beginning predisposes them to getting migraines – even if they don’t have a family member who gets them. Sometimes this predisposition can be kickstarted with something like a concussion, onset of periods, or medical illnesses but these kids were likely to develop headaches of some kind at some point even without this.

There are many symptoms beyond just head pain, these include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, and neck tightness. Lesser-known symptoms can include vision changes, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and irritability.
Can I prevent my child from getting migraines?
The simple answer is no. However, you and your child can recognize and avoid behaviors that can contribute to migraines like poor sleep habits, skipping meals, significant stress and poor water intake.
When to see a pediatric neurologist:
If your child is having headaches more than once a week, their headaches are interfering with their daily lives, or they don’t respond to over-the-counter medications, it’s time to speak with a physician.
