Florissant Honors Henry F. Hendel

The city hosted a plaque dedication making him as the 16th Walk Through History honoree at Wednesday Night Out.

Updated Sept. 27 with a photo of the Hendel plaque.Β

Henry F. Hendel was aΒ life-long resident of Florissant and a World War II Army veteran.

He is known as someone whoΒ loved Florissant and was a trueΒ ambassador for the city, so the city is paying its respects to his legacy and has named him the 16th Walk Through History honoree.Β

Hendel isΒ known to the public as the owner ofΒ Hendel’s Market, his family's namesake. In 1873, the Hendel'sΒ building was established as a grocery and general store. The Hendel family purchased it inΒ 1915.

For the next 78 years, the store continued as a specialty grocery and butcher shop. He and his wifeΒ Marge operated it for 47 years until theyΒ retired in August 1993. In November 1994, the family sold it toΒ Ed Bennett who transformed it into a restaurant.

Hendel was an active memberΒ of the American Legion Post 444 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.Β

The ceremony was held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 on rue St.Β Francois and St. Jacques right before the start of the Wednesday Night Out festivities at Hendel CafΓ©.

TheΒ WalkΒ Through History plaque is alwaysΒ dedicated to someone that has made a valuable contribution to theΒ City of Florissant.
