Glasgow Elementary School Teacher Receives Grant from WGU Missouri
The $3,000 grant that was awarded to Olivia Roberts will be used to revive the school community garden and courtyard
Olivia Roberts, a second-grade teacher at Glasgow Elementary School in the Riverview Gardens School District, has received a $3,000 grant through WGU Missouriβs βFund My Classroomβ initiative. The grant will be used to fund her schoolβs community garden and courtyard project β allowing Robertsβ students to learn how to plan and maintain a garden/courtyard, while gaining experience in sustainability, team building and community. Roberts learned she was selected for the grant on May 2 when WGU Missouri staff surprised her with a check presentation at her school.
Roberts has been working with her 2nd grade students to help them learn about the life cycle of plants. Reviving the community garden and courtyard at the school will provide her students with a hands-on opportunity to sow and harvest fresh fruit and vegetables and incorporate plants that are native to Missouri. They will be able to apply their knowledge to plan and maintain the school garden. The grant from WGU Missouri will be used toward the purchasing of plants and materials needed to transform the schoolβs community garden and courtyard.
The innovative classroom project is one of 50 across Missouri chosen by WGU Missouri to receive funding. The nonprofit, fully online university issued a call in March for K-12 teachers across the state to nominate proposed classroom projects by April 17 for the opportunity to receive full or partial funding through its βFund My Classroomβ initiative. Robertsβ proposal is one of almost 200 nominations received statewide. Most grants were awarded during Teacher Appreciation Week, which ran from May 2-6.

βWe received nominations for some amazing classroom projects, and we are happy to bring so many to life through this yearβs βFund My Classroomβ initiative,β said Dr. Terrance Hopson, Regional Director of WGU Missouri. βWhen it comes to expanding classroom curriculum and employing innovative techniques to engage and challenge students, teachers are often limited by costs. This initiative is an opportunity for WGU to give back to teachers, who go above and beyond to educate our students, by providing them with funding they can use to further enhance learning both in and out of the classroom.β
