Mattingly's Owner Jim Mattingly Passes Away

If you've lived in North County any amount of time, you've probably stopped in and dined or had a quick drink at Mattingly's. It's North County's 'Cheers' and a place where everyone truly does know everyone by their name. 

Sunday morning, the owner and founder of this great gathering place died suddenly of an apparent heart attack.

James "Jim" Francis Mattingly was 64.

Jim and his mother Edna started Mattingly's Inn in 1971 in the CIty of Hazelwood on Howdershell Road. He moved the business to Florissant some time later in 1985 after a fire destroyed the Hazelwood location. He expanded to a second location in St. Charles County.

A leader in the community, as well as husband, father, grandfather, brother and son; there aren't many with less than kind words to say about Jim.

He once told Patch at a past Mayors' Shamrock Ball he opened his restaurant as a place for all people.

"Mattingly's is for every walk of life," he said. "Those with white and blue collars and everything in between. 

"I know people by their first names when they walk through my doors."

Jim's public visitation will be held at Hutchens, located at 675 Graham Rd., in Florissant on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at North County Community Church on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m. The church is located at 7410 Howdershell Rd., in Hazelwood.

He leaves behind his wife, Cheryl A. Mattingly, children Kyle Mattingly, Stephanie Ritter, Jacquelyn Bridges, Andrea Kidd and John Eagan; as well as grandchildren Madisyn, Raquel, Natalia, Brendan, Austin, Braelynn, Nollan, Rubi, Aubreigh, McKenna and Ryan.
