Hazelwood Civic Center East Gets New Roof
After more than 10 years and enduring a couple intense hail storms, the building will have a new ceiling.
Barrels catching water and a leaky roof will be a thing of the past at the Hazelwood Civic Center East.
The City of Hazelwood will be replacing the facility's roof now that city council has given the final okay to do so.
Last month, Hazelwood city manager Edwin Carlstrom made a recommendation for council to approve the replacement because it appeared continuing to fix leaks was becoming costly with expired warranties.

Council approved a contract with Geissler Roofing Company, based in Belleville, Ill., for removal and replacement of the Civic Center East roof. The cost for the task―$68,900. Carlstrom said he received six bids with Geissler being the lowest bid.
The roof replacement is not a budgeted expense but Hazelwood Public Works director David Stewart said leakage is an ongoing problem and will remain so unless the roof is replaced. The roof had a 10 year warranty and is 11 to 12 years old, according to Carlstrom.

Doug Littlefield, Hazelwood's Parks and Recreation supervisor said the roof was repaired after the 2001 and 2006 hail storms that hit the area hard. The flat section of roof is foam and the contractor will no longer honor the warranty on it, Littlefield said. The new roof will not be foam.
