Last Day For HSD Students: Make the Summer Months Count

Classes end early today in the Hazelwood School District. With today serving as the last day of the 2010-2011 school year, "Patch" wants to know what you'll be doing this summer?

Today marks the last day of school for those in public school here in the . The will have early release today for all grade levels.

So now it's time for the kiddos to relax--fun in the sun, pools, junk food, bike rides, bad reality television and sleeping in late, right?

If you're like me, and as a parent your comment to the above statement is, "no way in the world," you may have other plans ahead for the summer.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, there is no denying the fact that students forget a substantial amount of what they learned during the school year when idle during summer months, specifically in math.

So be sure to incorporate some summer learning.

The Hazelwood School District will offer elementary, middle and high school summer school classes this year if that's an ideal option for your student.

High school summer school begins June 9 and ends July 15. Two sessions are available, 7:30 to 10:00 a.m. and 10:05 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. Middle and elementary summer school begins June 13 and ends July 12. These classes start at 8:10 a.m. and end at 11:55 a.m. There is no summer school on July 4.

Summer school will take place at all Hazelwood middle and high schools and at the following elementary schools – , Arrowpoint, Brown, Grannemann, Jamestown, Jana, Larimore, McCurdy and . Bus transportation is available for students who live more than one mile from the school.

In addition, there is also a music camp at Barrington Elementary School this year. Available for elementary band and orchestra students, it starts June 13 and ends June 23. Class starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 p.m. Students must have transportation to and from Barrington.

Middle school QUEST, a program to acclimate incoming sixth-grade students to middle school, offers two sessions, one from June 13 to 24 and the other from June 27 to July 12. Session times are 8:10 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. There are no middle school QUEST classes on July 4. Students take communication arts, math, social studies and science courses as well as a sampling of elective courses during the two week sessions. Bus transportation is available for QUEST students who live more than one mile from the school.
