Letter to the Editor: Hazelwood Sharks Information

As the parent of home-schooled students, this reader sheds light on the vital role that students who don't attend public schools play in municipal sports.

I recently discovered the Hazelwood Patch online. I really appreciate all of the articles about Hazelwood, especially the articles about the Hazelwood Sharks Swim Team.

My youngest two kids have swam on the team for the past seven seasons, and it is a great group of coaches, parents, and kids.

I haven't seen any other articles published about them, so it's been fun for me to read what you've written. I have a clarification to make.

Several of the articles mention that most of the Hazelwood West girls and boys swim teams swim for the Sharks. But in addition to the Hazelwood West swimmers, at least six of the swimmers in the 15-18 age groups are homeschool students, including two of the top swimmers--Grace Hotchkiss (my daughter) and Peter Hancock.

Another top swimmer, Matt Geiser, swims for Chaminade. Many of the younger students are also homeschooled or attend Catholic schools. The swim team is a great place for all of them to come together. By the way, my daughter has won every butterfly race she's been in this year except one and is a member of the winning freestyle and medley relays.

Thanks again for your excellent articles, not just about the Sharks, but about other aspects of Hazelwood.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Hotchkiss
