Man Charged with Child Abuse After 4-Year-Old Girl Becomes Unresponsive

Hazelwood Police officer's found a 4 year old girl drifting in-and-out of consciousness, with multiple injuries to her head, neck, back and stomach.

A Hazelwood man is in jail after police officers found a 4-year-old girl unresponsive in the 200 block of Chez Vant Court. That man is 21-year-old James Edward Jones.

Hazelwood Police Capt. James Hudanick said officer’s found the child drifting in-and-out of consciousness when the arrived. Hazelwood Fire Department EMS later arrived and found the child had sustained multiple injuries to her head, neck, back and stomach.

Hudanick said Jones lived at the residence and was the child's mother's boyfriend. Jones was at home when officers arrived.

Hudanick said it became evident Jones was the abuser during the interview process, but could not go into deeper detail.

The child was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Jones was charged with first-degree assault. He is being held in the St. Louis County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash only bond.
