Snow Days Mean More Days at School for Hazelwood Students

With the bought of winter weather that has hit the area, student's in Hazelwood face a longer school year to makeup for being out.

Your child may have enjoyed the second winter break last week due to the ice and snow that hit the area, but reality will hit them as most area schools either have to cut out upcoming holiday days off or keep students in school until June, in an effort to make up for all the snow days.

"I loved the days off," said Breanna Jarrett, a sophomore at School. "I don't care about getting out one day late.

"The snow days are there for us to use and my feeling is they should be used," she said. "I still had homework that I was able to do online."

Granted parents may not have to look forward to a much longer school year, unless more winter weather hits, impending changes can affect summer plans and make for an inconvenience as parents that still have to work on those snow days scramble to find sitters.

"I work at the mall so unless there is a Tsunami, most of the time I still have to go to work when school is called off," said Noelle Casaine the mother of a two-year old son. "I don't have a child in elementary school yet, but his daycare center closed so I couldn't go to work."

  • School districts across the state of Missouri are required to hold class for a minimum of 174 days as well as have 1,044 classroom hours, according to the Missouri Department for Secondary and Elementary Education.

Hazelwood’s Assistant Superintendent of Communications Diana Gulotta said the district allotted six inclement weather days in the 2010-11 school calendar year.

"We are on snow day number seven," she said. "So at this point we only need to add one day to the end of the school year.

"The Board of Education is responsible for approving an amended calendar, which we take to them in the spring."

Should the Hazelwood School District Board of Education approve an amended calendar, student would subsequently end up being  dismissed for summer break on June 2.

The next Hazelwood School Board of Education meeting is Feb. 15.
