Birds Get Tipsy Off Kirkwood Berries

Some cedar waxwings had a bit too much fun when they discovered fermented berries in a Kirkwood yard. The incident is one of two calls from Kirkwood received by the Bi-State Wildlife Hotline.

 responded to two animal calls in Kirkwood from Dec. 3-20.

On Dec. 19, a homeowner reported that cedar waxwings were walking around, falling over, stumbling and running into things in the yard. It turns out the birds were not hurt, just drunk.

The organization advised the caller that waxwings have a tendency to eat fermented berries and get a bit drunk. The caller was told that the birds will recover with time and advised to to call back if injuries occur.

 received another call from Kirkwood, this one involving a scrape between an opossum and a dog.

On Dec. 13, a caller was upset that her dog was in a fight with an opossum which resulted in the dog being taking to the vet for injuries. The caller wanted the opossum removed from her yard, but the organization couldn't fulfill her wish.

 advised the caller that it could not remove opossums from the wild as the creatures are a native species and it could never eliminate them all. The organization explained how to deter opossums in the homeowner's yard.
