Commitment to Treating Arthritis Earns Des Peres Surgeon High Honor
Dr. Leo Whiteside was honored by the Arthritis Foundation Saturday for his commitment to treating the condition that strikes one in five adults and is the nation's leading cause of disability.

Des Peres surgeon Dr. Leo Whiteside is known around the world for his contributions to the treatment of arthritis and surgery in general, and it's little wonder why.
Whiteside is responsible for 30 U.S. patents for surgical instruments and implant products, more than 200 articles in academic peer-reviewed journals, more than 20 book chapters, two major textbooks on the technical subjects of total knee replacement and in 1995 and 2001, the surgeon received awards for Excellence in Research from the Knee Society, according to .

“Each year we look for someone in our community that has made an impact on arthritis and who is well-respected by their peers,” said Janice Bignall, executive director of the Missouri Office Arthritis Foundation Heartland Region, in a statement. “Dr. Whiteside has distinguished himself as an internationally known orthopedic surgeon, inventor and educator. He is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on osteointegration technology in total knee and hip arthroplasty. His impressive list of accomplishments with local and national organizations is a true testament to his commitment to excellence.”
In addition to serving as Des Peres Hospital's Medical Staff Department of Surgery, Whiteside operates a private practice in Des Peres.
