New Warning Siren Installed in Kirkwood

With severe weather possible Wednesday, Kirkwood residents now have one more line of defense if they need to take cover.

St. Louis County announced it installed two new Outdoor Warning Sirens last month, including one in Kirkwood at Fire Station #2 at 11804 Big Bend Boulevard.

The new units were tested April 1 during the scheduled monthly test and St. Louis County officials said they had no problems with the new Kirkwood siren.

These new sirens bring the total number of sirens in the network to 199, St. Louis County officials stated in a news release. 

County officials remind residents that the the Outdoor Warning Siren System is intended for outdoor alerts only, and it is not designed to be heard inside buildings, including homes.

St. Louis County officials also stated in the news release that the St Louis County Emergency Communications Commission acted on community feedback and reduced the duration of the monthly outdoor warning siren test from three minutes to one minute. However, during an actual tornado, the warning sirens will be activated for the full three minutes.
