Ladue's Win Over Burroughs Sets Up a Showdown With MICDS Today
Guess which Rams' freshman found the back of the nets 3 times?
The animated Ladue soccer public address announcer likes to yell out the name this way: Lizzzzzy Pooooooo-yoooo.
He’s had the opportunity to yell that many times this season. This talented freshman, who plays select for Scott Gallagher is now second among all Ladue scorers with 19 goals, 8 assists and 46 points. Only her line mate, Natasha Medler, a junior has more, 47 points.
A star is born
Puyo got past Burroughs goal tender Evie Ogeslby 3 times, and Ladue shutdown the Bombers 5-Nil Wednesday afternoon.
That win, the 17th of the season for Ladue ties a school record in number of wins in a season. Friday, the Rams visit high-flying MICDS to try and break that mark.
Ladue got its other goals on a picture perfect header by Abby Shapiro in the first half with a great assist from Hayden Hunt and the final goal with 2 minutes left: a penalty kick by Mariana Alisio.
Medler assisted on Puyo’s first two goals of the game. Ladue scored twice at the top of the match before Ogeslby could really get her feet beneath her.
Puyo was surprised to be where she is today. “I had no idea I would have so many goals at this point in the season. We have four freshmen on the team, and everyone is making a contribution.
I was really excited to score early. I thought this was really going to be a good game to win because we would tie a record. Natasha put perfect balls on my foot and I just finished it.”
A quality win
Medler terms this a “good win.”
“We have some really good freshmen and they are pushing us (the older players), said Medler.
About picking up those early assists “Yea, we’ve got a connection,” she said, grinning.
Coach Dave Aronberg was a proud winning coach.
“We talked about this earlier in the year. We thought we had the potential. The way the freshman have stepped up really helps. We’ve done a nice job of easing them in, but they’ve just taken off, especially Puyo.”
Turns out, Puyo’s 19 goals so far is third on the all-time Ladue scoring charts already.
Fran Shannon turned in another goal keeping shutout. “Fran is awesome, and again, she’s our Ladue career shutout leader.”
Ladue started the year with three goal keepers, and are now down to one. Shannon got so much playing time, the other two took off.
Aronberg loved Shaprio’s header for a goal. “I don’t think we’ve had a prettier goal all season in the run of play. Hayden Hunt got right around a defender, and Shapiro knocked it in.”
