SLUH gets MICDS Coming Down the Stretch, 44-40

Junior Bills late surge is good enough for a win in Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at Scottrade Center.

The MICD Rams learned a painful lesson against the Junior Billikens of St. Louis U High, dropping a 44-40 decision in game 2 of the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at the Scottrade Center today.

The Rams failed to box out on a free throw and Charlie Nester followed his miss and canned a second attempt and won the struggle.

The two teams did not meet in the Rams Christmas tournament at home the very end of December.

"We played them (the Bills) last year and they beat us in overtime," said Rams coach Matt Hixenbaugh. "Both teams played good defense and in this game, points were at a premium."

"We were up going into the fourth quarter and in a position to win," said Hixenbaugh. "We didn't play with a lot of poise from that point forward."

The Rams had their chances. Senior William Morehead missed a 3-point attempt from the deep corner in the last minute, denying the Rams the chance to pull out a victory.

Austin Sottile hit 5 0f 13 shots for 12 points to lead the Bills' scoring. Robin Thompson had a game-high 17 for MICDS.

Hixenbaugh had praise for his 6-foot-6 junior forward Thompson. "He played well for a young player and he's learning," said Hixenbaugh.

The Junior Bills, 12-7 are showing signs of marked improvement. "We're trying," said their coach Erwin Claggett who played on this same floor when he was a Billiken at Saint Louis U.

"We still have a lot of things to work on. A lot of small things," he said.
