Brentwood Basketball Captain Meredith McGrath to Major in Journalism

Brentwood High School senior, Meredith McGrath is the third generation of her family to graduate from BHS. Her grandparents still live in Brentwood, and she has a brother and a cousin who also go to BHS.

Among all the McGraths, though, Meredith has definitely made her mark in Brentwood.

“I’m always about being positive, and giving your all, and setting higher expectations for yourself,” she said.  

McGrath has played varsity basketball all four years and been a team captain the last three.

Friday night the team beat Valley Park and won the conference title. Now their goal is to go as far as they can in Districts. She said this year’s team is the closest she’s ever been a part of.  “I love every minute of playing with them,” she said.

She played field hockey and soccer as a freshman and sophomore, but gave those up to have more time for schoolwork, she said. But then she got involved with student council, and this year was president.

McGrath’s usual enthusiasm ramps up when journalism is mentioned. She plans on majoring in it in college.

“I love writing so much,” she said.

“I’m not sure of print or broadcast journalism, and I also like graphic design,” she said. She’s considering Indiana University or Missouri University. Some scholarship options could help her decide.

At Brentwood she’s written for the school newspaper and yearbook staff, and done photography. She’s also been an anchor on the Brentwood Sports Center, a weekly video roundup of Brentwood sports founded by another senior, Josh McGehee.

She said when she leaves for a much bigger school she’ll miss the close-knit Brentwood school community.

“I’m going to miss the closeness of it, how the teachers are always there to support you,” she said.

“You don’t get to play three sports at other schools, and do all the other stuff,” she said. “There’s so many opportunities at Brentwood, and I’ve taken advantage of them.”
