Maplewood's Focal Point Gets Love From Webster University Students, Faculty

Focal Point artistic director Judy Stein depends on the annual workers from Webster University.

For 18 years, Webster University has canceled classes for a day to give community service around St. Louis.

Students, faculty and alumni go to theaters, gardens, nursing homes, childcare centers–where ever they’re needed to help out.

The day is called Webster Works Worldwide, and the Focal Point venue for folk music, in Maplewood, has been the on the receiving end for several years.

Webster senior, Katy Leach, from Webster Groves, practices Morris dancing there twice a week, and knows the artistic director, Judy Stein.

“The kids have done splendid work for us over the years,” Stein said. “Like Robins in the spring.”

She said they’ve repaired seats and mopped the floor. This years the helpers  also painted walls and restaining the exterior wood.

Stein said some upcoming shows are Blue Fusion and Chris Smither.
