Stop Sign Will Remain at Bridgeport and High School

A permanent stop sign was requested by residents living on Bridgeport Avenue.

The temporary stop sign at the corner of Bridgeport Avenue and High School Drive will become permanent soon.

The change was approved by the Brentwood Board of Aldermen during its regularly-scheduled meeting last Monday. Aldermen Anthony Harper (1), Keith Robertson (Ward 3) and Tom Kramer (Ward 4) voted against the change, but were overruled by the remaining five aldermen.

Drivers were previously required to stop at the sign while school was in session, but the sign was removed after school ended each day and during the summer.

Four residents who live on Bridgeport Avenue spoke during the meeting's public comment period to ask for a permanent stop sign.

Toni Bowman was among them. She called the temporary signs too confusing, and said removing the signs would be dangerous for pedestrians. She also handed city administrator Bola Akande a petition with 25 signatures supporting her position.

Other residents said the stop sign would continue to slow traffic through the neighborhood streets.

Robertson said there are better ways to control drivers' speeds through neighborhoods, including police enforcement.

Kramer favored the part-time sign with additional parking restrictions near the corner. Harper didn't voice an opinion.

Alderwomen Lorraine Krewson (Ward 4) and Barb Clements (Ward 1) both cited safety concerns when they voted in favor of the permanent sign.
