Coal Ash Landfill Opponents Delivering Petition to County Council on Tuesday

Residents and Sierra Club members against a proposed coal ash landfill in Oakville plan to deliver a petition against the project to the St. Louis County Council during their June 18 meeting, according to an announcement posted on Patch.

The coal waste depository is proposed at Ameren Missouri's Meramec Energy Center—located just over a mile from Rogers Elementary in the Mehlville School District. Ameren officials want to build new facilities for coal waste because its current storage is running out of room.

While the project was first announced in 2012, opposition efforts picked up steam in February. The Missouri Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign organizer has hosted community forums for residents looking for additional information.

Opponents also have their own Facebook group, No Coal Ash Landfill in Oakville.
