Common Core A Looming Discussion for Mehlville School Board

The topic will be an agenda item at a meeting before August when school resumes.

It has many school districts doing a lot of planning. That would be Common Core State Standards, which according to the Call, will be a topic of discussion at a future Mehlville Board of Education meeting.

Call staff writer Kari Williams writes that it is due to a request from the newest board member, Lori Trakas.

Trakas is the board vice president, and said she wants to flush out the integration of the standards because the community has a lot of questions.

Common Core, is a system of voluntary state standards intended to prepare students for college and the work force.  There are some federal funds tied to district transition to Common Core.

The National Governors Association and the Council of State School Officers  developed the Common Core standards to improve public schools through more rigorous requirements for math and English that would be followed across state lines.

Williams reports the the topic will be an agenda item at a meeting before August when school resumes.
