Oakville Woman Finds Healing in Kayaking

Mary Santhuff said she built confidence and learned to ease anxiety and depression associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Mary Santhuff was one of hundreds at a recent annual kayaking event and spoke with the Belleville News Democrat about how the sport has helped build her confidence and social skills.

A veteran, Santhuff is a retired sergeant in the Army National Reserve who served in Iraq, Kosovo and Germany.

The event is a partnership between the Missouri Whitewater Association and St. Louis Canoe and Kayak Club. Team River Runner, based at St. Louis Veterans Administration Medical Center at Jefferson Barracks, was also a sponsor this year.

Santhuff became involved with Team River Runner in 2006 after experiencing anxiety and depression associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

"They got me out of the house and helped me build social skills," she told the news outlet. "I've been able to prove to myself that I can do things that I didn't think I could do."
