Steve Cross elected to the GAC Hall of Fame!

FZN to recognize the 1983 graduate.

1983 FZN graduate Steve Cross, who won a state wrestling title while a senior at what was then called Fort Zumwalt Senior High, has been elected to the Gateway Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. The GAC Hall of Fame recognizes former GAC athletes, coaches and administrators who have achieved notoriety in their respective sport. The Hall of Fame was created to help recognize the conference's long and storied history. A panel that consists of all current and former GAC Athletic Directors make up the committee of voters that determines Hall of Fame eligibility. Cross was elected after being placed on the ballot for the first time.

A two-time All-State wrestler at Fort Zumwalt, after finishing 5th and 1st at the state championships, Cross was a part of one of the most highly successful eras of Zumwalt wrestling. During Cross’ senior season, the Panthers captured the school’s second conference title and earned a 2nd place trophy at the state 4A tournament. After high school, Cross competed for the University of Missouri, wrestling for coaches Bob Kopnisky and Wes Roper. Upon graduation from Mizzou, Cross began a highly successful coaching career. Cross was an assistant coach for Francis Howell North when the Knight’s captured the state title in 1991. In the fall of 1996, Cross became the first head coach at the new Francis Howell Central High School, a position he would hold for the next 27 years. During his time at Howell Central the Spartans become one of the most consistent programs in the state, winning numerous state trophies and district titles. In all, Cross led teams captured an impressive 9 district titles, 7 conference titles, and finished in the state’s top ten 14 times! The Spartans twice finished as the state runner-up, including Cross's final squad in 2023. Additionally, Cross coached 9 individual state champions, and 91 state medalists. He amassed 263 dual meet victories during his 27 years at FHC. Prior to the finals of the FZN Tournament, to be held on Saturday, December 2nd, the school will recognize Cross. The estimated time is 3:00 pm. All former athletes and teammates of Coach Cross are invited to attend.
