Heroin Addiction Assembly Hopes to Educate Parents, Students

will host a community assembly on Feb. 3 about the dangers and abuse of heroin in the community.

Two parents whose children have died because of heroin abuse, Marilyn Smashey and Pam Jones, will speak along with a representative from the St. Charles County Regional Drug Task Force.

"The use and abuse of designer drugs and heroin is on the rise in our community," wrote St. Charles High School counselor Lori Wootten in a press release. "Many students don’t even know that the pills they are taking are actually laced with heroin. Heroin is no longer just a drug that you shoot up with a needle. It can be found in many forms including pills. Heroin is a depressant and common symptoms are lack of interest in school, work or any other activities."

Wootten said the cheap rate of heroin contributes to the growing death rate due to heroin.

The assembly is 50 minutes long and will be held in the auditorium. Two sessions will be presented. The first one will be from 9 to 9:50 a.m. and the next at 10-10:50 a.m.
