Mom Talk: Budding Picasso or Future Hoarder?

How long must parents hang on to their children's artwork?

I recently ran across this article in the New York Times about how kids' artwork can start to take over your house.

Some parents have different, some might say ruthless, approaches to kid's scribbles. The second the artwork comes home in a backpack it goes straight into the trashcan.

If parents save every single drawing their children give them, are they teaching them to be stock pilers? On the other hand, if those children have real talent, how can you toss the smallest sketch?

This article made me think about the two pink bins my mom has tucked in her basement. One for me, one for my sister. My bin is filled with artifacts from my life birth to age 6 or 7. My first scribbles on paper, my kindergarten writing notebook and various certificates.

On the one hand, it's kind of fun to go through those things every few years. But on the other, I'm not sure what I'll do with that stuff when it one day lands on my doorstep.
