The Lindenwood men's soccer team lost its 2024 home opener, Sunday afternoon at Hunter Stadium, in a 3-1 defeat to the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.

The Lions are now 0-1-1 on the season. UTRGV is 1-0.

"That was a disappointing result," Lindenwood head coach Kris Bertsch said. "Our players deserved better. That was a competitive match until the end. There were some calls that didn't go our way unfortunately. I feel for my players as I felt they competed well and fairly."

The teams played a scoreless first half, with Lindenwood controlling much of the action. The Lions outshot the Vaqueros six to three, with four of their shots being on goal.

In the second half though, UTRGV took control and got goals from Jason Robles and Jaime Carrillo to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lions responded with a goal by senior Josh Francombe on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. It was Francombe's first goal of the season and second as a college player.

That set the stage for an exciting final 10 minutes of action, but the Vaqueros scored a goal in the very final minutes to put the game away.

The Lions will be back in action on Thursday, August 29, when they will travel to Dayton, Ohio, for a game against Wright State. Lindenwood's next home game is September 6 against Evansville.
