Social Media Club Starts in St. Charles

First event is a happy hour from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 2.

St. Charles County residents and business owners won't have to travel quite as far to meet up with people to talk about social media starting in August.

A group of several social media-savvy people have started the Social Media Club St. Charles (SMCSTC). The group's first meet up will be a happy hour 6-8 p.m. Aug. 2 at in downtown St. Charles.

There are several social media groups that regularly meet in the St. Louis including the Social Media Club St. Louis (SMCSTL). But SMCSTC organizer Jimmy Alkhouri, of St. Peters, says there's an appetite for a group in St. Charles County. Ivan Temelkov, Chrissy Pagnotti and Todd Jordan are the other members of the leadership team.

Kanna Taylor, marketing specialist for , said she has been picky about which SMCSTL meet up events she's attended, often going to those she knows will apply to her.

"The biggest reason I haven't been going as often to Social Media Club St. Louis is because they are so far away," she said. "They're cool locations and they always have great panels."

Both Taylor and Alkhouri said St. Charles County might be a little bit behind in using social media compared to businesses and residents of St. Louis.

Taylor said she's hopeful this club will start from scratch and gradually teach people about using various forms of social media. She hosted a Tweet Up recently and realized that it was a bit too advanced for some attendees.

"We should have started with the basics and not scared people away from it," she said.

Alkhouri said SMCSTC will start with monthly meetings, some of which will be formal learning opportunities with speakers, others which will be more social.

"Real life connections are great as well," he said, adding that the mission of all Social Media Clubs is, if you get it, share it.

"We want people to learn from each other," he said.
