St. Vincent Dominates Orchard Farm in Semifinal Match

The 6-2 loss means Orchard Farm will contend for third place Saturday.

Orchard Farm soccer team won't walk away with a first or second place trophy in the Class 1 tournament - but a third place trophy is still on the table.

The team fell 6-2 against St. Vincent in the semifinal game held at the Anheuser Busch Center Friday. The Eagles play Pembrooke Hill of Kansas City, which has a 13-14 record. Pembrooke Hill lost to Springfield Catholic (22-4) 5-0 in other semifinal game.

St. Vincent dominated for the first half, scoring twice. Orchard Farm Junior forward Brooke Burkhardt said the team was disappointed after those two goals. "Our heads completely dropped," she said.

St. Vincent would score four more times in the second half.

With about 20 minutes left in the game, Burkhardt said she turned to Kyleigha Wacker and told her how much she hates losing. "One goal will make me happy to say at least we tried," she told Wacker.

Burkhardt scored the first of Orchard Farm's two goals after Wacker sent the ball through the defense. Burkhardt took the ball down the left side, beat a defender and sent the ball into the net, she said.

Soon after, Orchard Farm sophomore Claire Liston got her second goal of the year when she knocked the ball in off of a corner kick.

Liston said the goals gave the team a little more energy and they played better for awhile.

The team is hoping to translate that feeling of losing into motivation to take home a third place trophy.

"It would still feel good," said Liston. "We've never made it this far in any sport at Orchard Farm."
