The Commuter Nightmare: How Bad Is It for St. Charles Commuters?

If you're in St. Charles city, you've probably got one of the easiest commutes in the county.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the average commute for American drivers is between 25 and 26 minutes. If you're from St. Charles, your average commute comes in well under that.

That's according to Slate, which says it takes St. Charles drivers in the 63301 area code an average of 21.3 minutes to get to work. Drivers from the 63303 area code are just slightly over that at 22 minutes.

A map on the Slate allows readers to enter a zip code and find out the average commute from their area.

In May 2011, Slate published a story called "Your Commute is Killing You," which revealed the following facts, gleaned from university studies and scientific research:

  • Divorce is 40 percent more likely when one partner has a daily commute of more than 45 minutes
  • Long-distance commuters suffer "disproportionate pain, stress, obesity, and dissatisfaction"
  • The length of a commute to work affects people more than the length of the work day itself
