St. Peters Police Planning Sobriety Checkpoint

In an effort to take impaired drivers off the road during the holiday season, St. Peters Police have planned a sobriety checkpoint.

At an undisclosed location on the weekend of Dec. 14, St. Peters Police will be cracking down on drunken driving. The checkpoint is part of an effort to make the roads safer—218 people were killed and 867 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver in 2011. St. Peters Police said impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities. 

Drunken driving can result in jail time, the loss of a driver's license, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Insurance rates also can rise, along with legal fees. 

Missouri has a zero tolerance law for impaired driving. If drivers are under the legal drinking age of 21, their license will be suspended if they're caught driving with even a trace of alcohol in their system.

“Driving drunk is simply not worth all the consequences,” said St. Peters Police Chief Tom Bishop.  “It is our goal to keep the streets of St. Peters safe for this holiday season.”
