The City of Crestwood Police and the Parks and Recreation Departments are teaming up to have an Alternative Dance Mixer. This first fall event is an Alternative Halloween Dance Party Mixer. This event is designed specifically for 5th through 8th graders as a place to meet friends and enjoy a DJ, dancing, mingling, pizza, soda, prizes and other sponsored activities.
Alternative History: The Alternative was created over a decade ago to provide an alternative to give the youth something to do. Since then, the Alternative has grown to become very successful and positive for our youth. Traditionally, we have held the Alternative in the summer months that provides swimming, DJ, dancing, pizza and other activities five times throughout the summer. These events are held by the Crestwood Police and Parks and Recreation Departments. It is our thought that by providing “Alternative” activities as a prevention model is imperative to a young person’s foundation. Alternative activities have the potential to provide protective factors such as: Bonding with others, opportunity for pro-social involvement in the community and increasing social skills. All of these are important for developing healthy behaviors.
We have decided to provide the Alternative in the winter months as another avenue for our youth to have a place to go that provides constructive and healthy activities to offset the attraction to other activities that could possibly send them down the wrong path. Most importantly, we are providing a safe place for our youth to go that is a controlled environment supervised by our very own Crestwood Police Officers and other Crestwood staff. We are planning to hold additional events throughout the winter months. To learn more about the Alternative, follow us on Facebook or go to the City of Crestwood website.
