Updated: Lindbergh School District Responds to Sandy Hook School Shooting

 The Lindbergh School District issued the following statement following Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.: 

"We are saddened today by the tragic loss of life at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The administration and staff at Lindbergh Schools have made security a primary focus for many years. Our buildings are secure, and our complete focus is on protection of students. Additional safety measures are being implemented at this time to reassure our community, our parents, our students and our staff that they are safe. We will continue to monitor information as it becomes available.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families in Newtown, Conn."

The school district has also provided tips for helping your own children cope with the shooting.

In a message to families on the school's Facebook page, Crestwood Elementary principal Scott Taylor acknowledged that some parents may not have discussed the event with their young children. 

"Please know that we will not be talking about Newtown at school tomorrow. I know that many of our students are not aware of these sad events," he said. "If your child/children does have knowledge of this tragedy, please ask them to not discuss Newtown on the bus or around other children."

In a second message Monday morning, Taylor said teachers met before classes to emphasize

Teachers "emphasized our safety procedures and what do to if students were talking about Newtown" in a brief meeting before classes, he said in a second message on Monday morning.

St. Louis Police will also be increasing security at St. Louis County-area schools.
