Ten Years Later, Did the Census Show Us Anything We Didn't Already Know?

Just looking at Sunset Hills and Crestwood here.

For Sunset Hills and Crestwood, the U.S. Census—taken every 10 years—confirmed something most of us have very little doubt about:  We aged by 10 years since the last census.

In 2000, the largest portion of the population was 35 - 50 years old, in both Crestwood and Sunset Hills.

Now, according to the 2010 census figures, most us are 45 - 60 years old.

On the other hand, this information may tell us that very few of Crestwood and Sunset Hills residents are fleeing our fair cities. They may be sticking around because they like it. Or they may be staying put because they just can't afford to move elsewhere.

The census doesn't ask questions about why, but only what.

Another set of data about Missouri from the 2010 census was released Thursday.

We also learned that Sunset Hills and Crestwood are not what could be described as "diverse" communities, and that has stayed the same since 2000.

Crestwood is about 25 percent larger than Sunset Hills, when it comes to population. Crestwood weighs in with 11,912 people now—up from 11,863 in 2000. Sunset Hills now has 8,496 people—up from 8,263 ten years ago.

Earlier in the year, Missourians learned from the census that the state overall dropped in population, leading to the loss of one Congressional district and one less representative from Missouri in the U.S. Congress.

Now, for some unofficial advice for those who may be looking to meet that special someone in Sunset Hills or Crestwood—consider the odds.

Both cities have fewer males than females. Sunset Hills has some 400 more females than males, and Crestwood has 300 more females than males. And many of these may already be in a committed relationship, since the average household sizes of both cities hovers around 2.3 persons—down from about 3 persons ten years ago.
