Four Teams Short-Listed for I-64 Daniel Boone Bridge Design-Build Project

ST LOUIS – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has received Statements of Qualification (SOQ) from four teams interested in competing for the contract to design and construct a new Interstate 64 Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River connecting St. Charles and St. Louis counties.  

These SOQs have been evaluated and all four teams have been short-listed to proceed.

“We are very pleased to have received four qualified teams. The teams include national companies with Design-Build experience and major river bridge experience and St. Louis companies with local experience,” said I-64 Daniel Boone Project Director Jim Gremaud. “We look forward to working through the procurement process this spring to select the best team to build the bridge within budget and provide a structure that will last for century.”

The short-listed teams are as follows:

• American/MBI & Associates
• KCI
• Massman Traylor
• Walsh/Alberici

There are still opportunities for additional consultants and subcontracting firms to be added to each team. A networking opportunity for Disadvantaged Business Enterprises will be offered this spring, more information will be available on the project web site.

Design-Build is a project delivery method that combines both the design and construction phases into one contract. This one contract team completes the design and construction in parallel instead of in succession, which saves time and resources.

MoDOT has established Design-Build goals for the project. The contractor team will be selected using a Best Value process to determine the team who can best meet or beat the following goals:

• Deliver the project within the programmed budget of $125 million
• Construct a Missouri River bridge that can be reasonably maintained to provide more than a century of useful life
• Maximize the mobility, capacity and safety improvements in the corridor when construction is complete
• Minimize and mitigate construction impacts and maximize work zone safety to customers through construction staging and communication efforts
• Complete the project no later than July 1, 2016

MoDOT will issue the Request for Proposal in early March. At that time, the teams will use this information to prepare their plans for how they will design and construct the project. Their proposals are due to MoDOT in early June. The contractor should be selected in July 2012 and construction could start as early as this fall.
