Another Loop Business, Doughocracy, Is Closing

The latest closing is part of a disturbing trend for University City's trendy business district.

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO — Doughocracy, a pizzeria in the Delmar Loop, is closing, the Riverfront Times reports. The restaurant, which opened in 2015 with a fast-casual take on pizza, will serve its last customers this weekend. It now joins a growing list of restaurants and retailers that have shut their shopfronts in University City's trendy business district, including Rocket Fizz, HSB Tobacconist and Snarf's, which closed earlier this month.

Business owners have cited decreased foot traffic and declining sales, with many blaming a multi-million dollar trolley that has yet to materialize. Financed in part by a districtwide sales tax, the Loop Trolley was supposed to bring more customers to the Loop, but has turned into a growing money pit.

The Loop Trolley Company said last year it needed another half million dollars cash before it could begin services. Two local real estate development firms — Clayco and CRG — announced in December they would front the money, but as of March, the company has yet to announce a date for service to begin.
